About Jessica Fung

Jessica Fung is a distinguished musician, music scholar, producer, and lecturer. She holds a Master of Music (MMus) from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where she was honored as a Jockey Club Scholar, as well as both a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Music from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Jessica is active in the realm of popular music as a Dizi performer. Recently, she founded a fusion band DiZonant, which creatively blends the sounds of a traditional band with the Dizi. Recent projects also include original scores for the film 人生路不熟 (2023) and the theme song for the Hong Kong television drama 黃金萬兩 (2023). She has performed as a soloist and ensemble musician at concerts for prominent artists such as Hua Chenyu (2024), Johnny Ip (2024), and Liza Wang (2025).

 

Artistic Contributions

As an accomplished artist, Jessica has performed in renowned cities such as Doha, Kuwait, London, Saint Petersburg, Vienna, Singapore, Guangzhou, Macau, and Hong Kong.

In her role as both an artist and the artistic planner of her co-founded ensemble TroVessional, she has curated and produced a variety of funded music and art programs. Notable projects include:

  • The 2023 Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme: Fly Me to Hong Kong (飛粵香港), sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, HKSAR

  • The Community Driven Project: Baby Nanyin Sing with Me (南音兒歌樂融融), an educational kit and online program funded by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office, HKSAR (2024)

  • The Touring Lecture Performances: Chinese Regional Music: Cantonese Music (廣東地區的中國音樂: 講座音樂), sponsored by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (2024)

  • Cantonese Music and the 16 Personality Types (粵人無數: 廣東音樂與16型人格), organized by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2025)

  • The 2025-26 Intangible Cultural Heritage Cantonese Music: The North District (非遺音樂.北區情), sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, HKSAR (2025)

 

Academic Contributions

Jessica is a member of several international associations, including:

  • The International Council for Traditional Music and Dance (ICTMD)

  • The Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM)

  • The Southeast Asia branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM)

Her recent research focuses on Cantonese music and Dizi performance. She has presented her research at various conferences in locations such as Hong Kong, Penang, Accra, Lisbon, Bangkok, Wellington, and Atlanta. Moreover, Jessica has been invited to speak at institutions like City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and the Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Centre, participating in panels, seminars, and workshops.
